A severe thunderstorm bears down on Port Mahon, Delaware. This storm resulted from the extratropical cyclone responsible for the historic late-March 2023 tornado outbreak, which produced 146 tornadoes across a wide swath of the US. An EF3 tornado caused significant damage and a fatality further south near Greenwood and Bridgeville, making it one of Delaware’s most severe tornadoes. I took this photo moments before weathering the most intense barrage of rain, hail, wind, and lightning I’ve ever witnessed—a viscerally powerful and immensely humbling experience.
